Iran’s former ambassador to Afghanistan believes Afghanistan will soon join the list of customers of Iran’s gas and this needs appropriate infrastructures.

Speaking to ILNA, Abolfazl Zohrehvand said the need for Afghanistan to Iran’s gas is definite, adding that Iran needs a stable and developed Afghanistan and development of Afghanistan is in fact a strategic goal for Iran, and by this means, we can activate the eastern part of the country.

On export of gas to Afghanistan, he said although it is true that Afghanistan has considerable gas reserves, they are currently unexploitable because Afghanistan currently provides a major part of its fuel needs through imports, so Afghanistan’s need for Iran gas is a definite issue.

On providing security for the gas pipeline in Afghanistan, he said security is a soluble issue but this is capacities and infrastructure which should be created by the Afghans.

Zohrehvand said the more Afghans prepare their infrastructures, the more activities and investment will be in the gas sector.

He emphasized that Iran looks at gas export to Afghanistan as a developmental and security issue rather than just gas sales and its economic aspect.
