Rift in Taliban over peace talks is not true; Taliban spokesman told ILNA
Taliban spokesman Zabihollah Mojahed said to ILNA correspondent that rift in the Taliban over peace talks with U.S is not true.
Speaking to ILNA news agency, he added that recent propaganda about leadership rifts emerge in leading figures shows that simultaneously with peace talks, they want to stir up public opinion.
"Those remarks show that analysts do not have enough knowledge of the Taliban ranks." Adding that Taliban is a united front and splitting between groups is impossible.
Mojahed rejects media claims of Taliban joining Daesh terrorist group and said "Daesh's goal in Afghanistan is to destroy the unity of the Afghan people."
Taliban militants launched an attack on the Afghan city of Kunduz from multiple directions early Saturday morning, a Defense Ministry spokesman said -- the first major Taliban assault on the provincial capital since 2016.
U.S. President Donald Trump says negotiations are going well with the Taliban but that the sides have not yet reached a deal over a U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
A day earlier, Trump had said that, while U.S. troop levels in war-ravaged Afghanistan were being cut, the United States would continue to maintain a military presence in the country even after a peace deal with the Taliban is reached.
