The Middle East expert discusses the future of political tensions between Iran and Unites States and said to ILNA correspondent that a large number of US Congress members oppose Donald Trump's decisions.
Steven Simon, a former United States National Security Council senior director for the Middle East and North Africa added, "I have to emphasize performance of nuclear deal with Iran. I think it was a good thing since the Obama era and should be respected."
"Trump actually acts on the basis of Israel's interests, leaving it is also a step towards the interests of Israel. Israel sees Iran as a threat and as a powerful factor," he confirmed.
"On the other hand, Trump is close to Arab countries such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and serves their interests."
A former US official said that a large number of US Congress members oppose Trump decisions, sanctions, and government actions against Iran and exit it. "The best way is to solve tension is to negotiate, but talks are useful when extremists in the Trump government, such as John Bolton are relieved of their steep positions.
Simon told that Trump himself does not seek war with Iran. He is even trying to make use of intermediaries and countries that have good relations with Iran to connect with Tehran.
Steven Simon is the executive director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS-US) and the corresponding director of IISS-Middle East. He has served as a member of the White House's national security staff and is an expert on US foreign policy and security in the Middle East and North Africa.
