UN envoy for Syria to hold talks with Iran, Russia, Turkey

The UN envoy for Syria Stefan De Mistura is seeking meetings with Iran, Russia and Turkey as guarantors of Astana peace talks, Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric announced.

'The Special Envoy looks forward to hosting within the context of the Geneva process consultations shortly with senior officials of the Astana guarantors and Sochi co-conveners, Iran, the Russian Federation and Turkey,' Dujarric said addressing a press conference.

'As indicated in his briefing to the Security Council on 26 October 2018, Special Envoy de Mistura has been continuing intensive consultations on the early establishment of a constitutional committee,' he added.

The ninth round of Syria peace talks to solve Syrian crisis participated by representatives of Iran, Russia and Turkey as well as the UN chief's special envoy on Syria was held in Astana on May 15.

Unlike the previous rounds, the new round of the talks was held in Sochi, Russia.

Establishment of a Syrian constitutional committee, the de-escalation zones in Syria, and humanitarian issues were among topics discussed in Sochi on July 30-31.
