Zarif tweets key points agreed upon in Vienna meeting

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has emphasized the achievements of the JCPOA joint commission meeting in Vienna, in a tweet after the meeting drew to a close on Friday.

Zarif wrote in his Twitter account:  “Highlights of #JCPOA meeting today: 1. All committed to ensure Iran's benefits: US isolated; 2. Moving in right direction on concrete steps for timely implementation of commitments; 3. Iran reasserted its rights to respond to US violations if remedial measures prove insufficient,”

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) joint commission meeting was held in Vienna's Cobourg Hotel on Friday to discuss the future of the multilateral nuclear accord.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini chaired this round of JCPOA joint commission meeting, where participants discussed the "EU package of proposals" to Iran following America's unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who headed the Iranian delegation met with Mogherini and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday morning and other members of the EU/E3+2 (France, Germany, UK plus Russia and China) had also bilateral meetings.

US President Donald Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement on 8 May.  Trump also said he would reinstate US nuclear sanctions on Iran and impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.
