Electricity import from Turkmenistan start today; official
“Electricity imports from Turkmenistan will start today,” the chairman of Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Chamber of Commerce Majid Mohammadnejad told ILNA.
The Iranian official said to ILNA news agency correspondent that imports of 250 MW of electricity from this country will begin today, and imports will likely be in the form of goods.
The grounds for energy exchange with Turkmenistan were laid in 1999, but practical steps were taken in 2002. The Iranian power grid is currently connected to and exchanges energy with electricity networks of Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Nakhichevan enclave.
Referring to the latest state of trade between Iran and Turkmenistan, Mohammadnejad said “Due to the outbreak of coronavirus, the Iran joint border with Turkmenistan namely Sarakhs, Lotfabad and Incheboron have been closed for the past four months and Iran connected to Eurasia and Central Asia from this route.
Asked about Turkmenistan's breaking its promise to reopen border with Iran on June 10, he said that Iran's Foreign Ministry officials are following up the case.

Iran and Turkmenistan share a common border of more than 1000 km. The two countries have good relations since Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
