The governor of the Central Bank of Iran says important developments in banking and trade will take place following talks between the presidents of Iran and Turkey.

According to CBI's official website, Abdolnaser Hemmati in meeting with his Turkish counterpart said boosting commercial ties and facilitating banking relations were discussed.

Hemmati accompanied President Hassan Rouhani during a one-day meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“The Turkish leader has a positive opinion about banking relations between the two nations and insisted on solving financial and banking relations between two countries”, he said.

Hemmati said in an Instagram post that he had discussed hurdles to banking ties between the two neighbors in the presence of the Turkish president.

Iran and Turkey agreed to step up economic cooperation with the aim of reaching a $30-billion target in their annual trade, voicing concern over the re-imposition by the US of unilateral sanctions -- a move which they said could undermine the region's economy.

The agreement was reached at the 5th Meeting of High Council of Iran-Turkey Strategic Cooperation in Ankara chaired by Rouhani and Erdogan, according to a joint statement issued on Thursday.

Tehran and Ankara, the statement said, called for closer bilateral relations in all areas, especially economic, politicals and the fight against terrorism, saying enhanced ties can and will contribute to peace and stability in the strategic region.

In September Turkey, Iran and Russia agreed to use their local currencies for commercial activities between the three neighbors.
