A top Iranian official said that the number of Afghans entering Iran from official borders has risen to about 5,000 a day.

Director General of the Office of International Transit and Transportation of the Iranian Highways Organization, Javad Hedayati, said in an exclusive interview with ILNA that since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, the number of Afghans entering Iran from official borders has risen to about 5,000 a day.

He said that before recent Afghanistan's developments this number was something between 700 and 800 people per day.

“This population enters the country through official border crossings and they have passports and visas and there are no restrictions on entering the country for them,” he said.

He stressed that a large number of Afghans enter Iran through informal borders and the exact numbers are not available.
